I come to you this week with deep gratitude for the blessings of your grace and hospitality. The basic definition of hospitality is "the friendly reception and treatment of strangers." Seen through the lens of our faith, however, it becomes something much broader and deeper. It is a way of revealing Christ to those we do not yet know.
Friends, you have shown Keith and me the love of Christ over these last few weeks. Even amid change—which brings all sorts of emotions and grief—you have been the church. The Trustees, along with those assisting them, worked hard to have our new home ready a little early so that we would have time to settle in. The Staff-Parish Relations Committee met with us early on to learn about our needs during the move. So many of you have provided food and checked in to see if we needed help upon our arrival. We have some wonderful cooks among us!
We have also received several welcome gifts and packages containing information about the church, the island, and all there is to do. We cannot thank you enough for the love of Christ you have already extended to us. I know that every transition brings a sense of uncertainty, yet your faith that God has led us all to this place at this time is evident in the way you have welcomed us and shown up for us.
This Sunday will be my first with you, and I know many will be traveling for the holiday. However, if you are able, I hope you will plan to join us for worship. My sermon is based on John 4 and the story of the woman at the well. I will share how this woman's encounter with Christ speaks to my own faith journey. Together, we will also consider what this experience meant for her and what it may mean for us as we encounter others in the world.
I look forward to getting to know each of you through friendship, fellowship, and service.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Angie
