Greetings, friends!

Growing up can be hard. Although it's been a while, I still remember what it was like trying to figure out who I was. I was developing my identity while also longing not to stand out too much. Like most young people, I wanted to belong, to be part of a group, and to have trusted friends with whom I could navigate life.

Looking back, I realize how valuable it would have been to have that kind of community rooted in faith. Having friends who are supported and nurtured by the people of God creates a different kind of connection for all of us, but especially for our children and youth.

It dates me to say, "back when we didn't have the internet," but back when we didn't have the internet, there was at least a break from the pressures of the world. If we had a hard day at school, we could find refuge at home. The world our young people live in today is always with them. The pressures, expectations, and noise seem to follow them everywhere they go. That's why having a community that grounds them in God's love and surrounds them with caring adults and faithful friends is more important than ever. I've seen the difference it makes through my own children and in every church I've served.

What's more, every time I'm with our young people, I learn something new about Jesus. Through their faith, their questions, their honesty, and their joy, I see fresh reminders of God's presence and work in the world. That's one of the reasons Youth Sunday is so important.

Our youth are not simply the future of the church. They are the church, right now. This Sunday, they will be leading every aspect of worship, and I couldn't be more grateful for the witness they offer. I rejoice in this group of young people who are revealing Christ to the world today. I rejoice in a church that continues to say "I will" to nurturing the faith of our children and youth. And I rejoice in each of them and each of you.

Please join me this Sunday as we celebrate and give thanks for the love of Christ made known through this remarkable group of young people.
