Hi Friends,
I said in church on Sunday that I cannot wait for school to start again. Now, that does not exactly apply to my kids since they are at Lamb in year-round school, but I know so many parents are looking forward to the return of routines and the excitement of a new year. Plus, the start of school always ushers in for me my favorite seasons- fall and football.
With the start of school just weeks away, I want to encourage you all to take part in collecting school supplies for the Teacher’s Supply Fair. Not only is it a great time right now to pick up a lot of supplies on sale, but it is a big way that we can show up for our community to let teachers know that we love and support the work that they do for our kids. Far too often, teachers must use their own funds to stock their classrooms with quality supplies. The Teacher’s Supply Fair is free for all teachers to shop, and we can help start their year off well. I hope you will join me in picking up some supplies for the fair. You can find a list of needed supplies here.
And speaking of going back to school, I am excited for classes to get underway again this fall. I am offering an in-person and Zoom option for a new book study class on social justice and the United Methodist Social Principles. Each month, we will come together to discuss a book that engages a social justice issue. We will look at what the Social Principles say about the issue, and we will come together to discuss actions that we can take in our community surrounding those issues. Our first gatherings will be next week on Wednesday, July 31st at 1:00PM in the Multi-purpose Room and Thursday, August 1st at 8:00PM on Zoom. We will start this month with an introduction to the class and an introduction to Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove's book Reconstructing the Gospel. We will use that same book for our late August discussions, so please be sure to pick up a copy at your favorite bookseller. Please email me at associate.pastor@mumconline.com for more information.
One of our new members, Jeff Aldridge, will also be starting Adam Hamilton’s study Making Sense of the Bible starting Tuesday, August 6th on Zoom at 7:00PM. This is a fantastic opportunity to dive deeper into your study of scripture. You can sign up for my class and Jeff’s class on our signup page.
As you consider your own discipleship journey, I hope you will take advantage of one of these or other class opportunities that will arise as we go throughout the coming fall season. I hope to hear all about what you are learning!
Grace and peace,
Pastor Rachel
